Lamy 2000 Ballpoint Pen 3

Lamy 2000 Ballpoint Pen Review

The Lamy 2000 Ballpoint pen is an extraordinary pen. Its design is timeless, sophisticated, and functional. It looks like no other pen and feels like no other pen. The Lamy 2000 Ballpoint Pen is lightweight, ergonomic, and writes well.

Lamy 2000 BallpointThe Lamy 2000 Ballpoint Pen was initially released in 1996, based on the Lamy 2000 Fountain Pen design released in 1966. All Lamy 2000 product family members have maintained their design since release, with minimal design changes occurring after their initial release. The design has gone unchanged because of its history and awards.

The original design was created by Gerd A. Müller in 1966 and became a historic success. Müller was a former Braun product designer with a reputation in the German design industry. In designing the Lamy 2000 ballpoint pen, Müller used Bauhaus design elements. Bauhaus style was a German product design principle that featured “form follows function.” Bauhaus design is characterized by a simple and functional design that allows the art to arise from craftsmanship.

The history and legacy of the Bauhaus style are shown beautifully in the Lamy 2000 Ballpoint pen. The pen’s shape is ergonomic and balanced with a spring-loaded clip. The body of the pen is made from Makrolon, a polycarbonate unique to this pen. The Makrolon material gives the pen a warm, comfortable, and light touch. Adding a nice accent to the black Makrolon is the brushed matte stainless steel used for the clip, pen point, and click button.

Lamy 2000 BallpointThe materials and shape of the Lamy 2000 Ballpoint Pen create a wonderfully balanced and lightweight pen. The shape gradually widens towards the middle of the pen and tapers back towards the end of the pen. This shape allows the user to shift their grip to accommodate a more narrow or broader hold.

The Lamy 2000 ballpoint refills write smoothly. However, the ink color is a bit light and washed out. However, Monteverde does make refills precisely to fit the Lamy 2000 Ballpoint Pen. As an alternative to purchasing Lamy refills, Monteverde refills are slightly smoother with darker ink than the Lamy refills. The Monteverde refills are also slightly cheaper on Amazon.

In my final thoughts, the Lamy 2000 Ballpoint pen is a bit pricy for a ballpoint, but is well worth the expense.  With the lightweight Makrolon pen body, the grip is smooth, yet still tactile.  Then pens tapering and wider body feels balanced.  This makes the pen very comfortable to hold and write for extended periods of time.  Then pen is a solid success.  However, the ink color is a bit disappointing.  Putting the ink color aside, the Lamy branded refills write smoothly and consistently.

For reference, I bought the pen on Amazon for $39.72.
