Waterman Expert Ballpoint pen review

Review of the Waterman Expert ballpoint pen

I enjoy all of my pens, but I have a few favorites. The Waterman Expert ballpoint pen is one of them. It is a well-balanced pen with attractive chrome accents and smooth ink refills.  This Waterman Expert Ballpoint pen review covers what I think are the best features.

The Waterman Expert ballpoint pen has a modern and attractive design with well-placed chrome accents. An example of the modern accent is well displayed with the chrome rings in the center of the pen body. These rings are separated by black lacquer between the two rings. This creates an almost Art Deco aesthetic to the chrome rings.Cross Pen Mid Section

Another unique design element of the Waterman Expert Ballpoint pen is the slanted end of the pen with an imprinted “W” for Waterman. The “W” is not accented or embellished. Rather, it is simply a stamp in the same color as the body, visible only by direct observation. This is beautifully understated and elegant, with a calligraphic font for the “W”.

The total pen weight is 35.1 grams, which is evenly distributed across the pen. Balancing the pen on my finger, the balanced midpoint is perfectly in the middle of the pen.Review of the Expert Ballpoint pen weight

The Waterman Expert Ballpoint pen’s action is smooth and purposeful. With a slight twist of the pen, the ballpoint is extended. The action is purposeful with a clear spring-loaded starting and ending position. Rather than a click or a simple twist, this pen twist employs a spring that guides the twist back and forth from opening to closing.

First introduced in 1995, the Waterman Expert is available in ballpoint, rollerball, and fountain pen styles. I only own the ballpoint style, which I am using with a Waterman ballpoint refill. The pen comes in several finishes, including simple lacquer, matte lacquer, and brushed metal. The clip portion of the pen is also available in two main styles: lacquer and metal.

However, all the styles share some common elements, such as the slanted end with the understated imprinted “W” and the same metal accents.

I can’t speak for all the styles, as I only own the ballpoint pen version. However, the ballpoint pen, using the original Waterman refill, writes smoothly and consistently. I personally bought the ballpoint pen version because it is the most affordable of the versions. I bought mine for $38 on sale, although it retails for $116 at Pen Boutique.

For refills, the Waterman Expert can accommodate both the official Waterman refill as well as a refill that Monteverde produces. Personally, I’ve only used the official Waterman refill, which is smooth and consistent.

Ultimately, the Waterman Expert ballpoint pen is my favorite daily pen, which I use the most. This pen is easily worth the full $116. This pen has a very sturdy build that will last for many decades of use.
